All the voices – who to listen to

“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” Colossians 3:2

So many times in life when we are faced with difficulties and decisions, we turn to people, we turn to the internet, we look at what others do and say. But, that is not what God wants us to do and how He wants us to approach life’s difficulties and decisions.

In His word, he makes it very clear that we should look to Him for guidance. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not depend on your own (or other people’s) understanding. Seek Him in all you do, and He will direct your path” Proverbs 3:5 – 6
The Bible is very clear on this.

Now, I am not trying to say that we should not seek council from one another, “in the counsel of many there is wisdom” (Proverbs 15:22). However, we have to make sure we guard our hearts and our vision and share it with God first, seek His counsel first, and He will put the right people in place for us to share it with.

On various occasions, I have found myself sharing with people my dreams, plans and challenges. They all had good and pure intentions, but more often than not I found myself talking to people before God. It was easier, it felt more natural.
People’s voices and their opinions overshadowed what God was trying to whisper into my heart. People, unintentionally, clouded my vision. They cast doubt where God wants to give certainty. They push in directions where God does not want to lead you.

Some practical advice

  • Instead of asking people for advice, ask them to pray for or with you;
  • Share your heart with God first, and ask Him to bring people into your life whom you can confide in;
  • Ask your friends if you can talk to them, not necessarily to ask for advice, but tho just listen to you; and
  • Find a Godly group of people whom you can spend time in the Word with to confide in.

“Life and death lies in the power of the tongue” Proverbs 18:21

This means that we can speak life into each other’s situations as well, it also means we can speak death into each other’s situations.

Who do you allow to speak into your life? What do they say? What do you say about your situations?

Keep your mind on God and His plans for your life. Chase your dreams with all your heart and ignite the fire within you, and other, with life-filled words!
